The Problem 1. Alcohol is the most commonly abused drug among youth. 2. 20% of the high school student population reported that they consumed some amount of alcohol last month.*
3. 42% who drank alcohol also tried drugs.
4. 29% of high school girls who drank alcohol also got pregnant.
The Solution Communicate to Students. Talk to students about drug and alcohol addiction. Display our "Drug & Alcohol Prevention" poster series to convince students that most of their peers choose not to do drugs. Provide factual information about the issues involved in the underage use of drugs and alcohol.
Encourage Family Involvement. It’s important to reach out to families and communities. You can help protect students by working to see that rules about underage drinking are in place at home and laws about underage drug & alcohol use are well known and enforced.
Start After School Programs. Provide community organizers with ideas and suggestions for accomplishable underage drug and drinking prevention activities that target communities, businesses, social events, media, parents and youth.
